Community Rallies Behind Claremont Post Office

3.10.33pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 18th Mar 2008

Walcot Councillors Dave Dixon and Colin Darracott have been getting a fantastic response from the local community to their efforts to save Claremont Post Office.

A rainy petition day and an evening collecting signatures from local residents have revealed massive public opposition to the government's plan to close this Post Office, with around 200 residents having signed the "Save Claremont Post Office" petition already.

Cllr Dixon (Lib Dem, Walcot) said, "People were shocked to learn that their local Post Office was on the list. While we accept that the next nearest Post Office is only half a mile away, it is at the bottom of a very steep hill. How are the elderly and disabled expected to return home having visited this Post Office?"

Cllr Darracott (Lib Dem, Walcot) added, "It's clear that the government doesn't care about the value of the Post Office to the local community. If they did, they would realise how much residents value having the service in their local area and how much trouble many residents will have in getting to and from the alternative."
